DANNY HAY
Personal Stats DOB: 15th May 1975 Birthplace: Auckland, NZ Height: 6'3"
Profile
Danny Hay was a surprise arrival in August 1999, when David O'Leary swooped to sign the promising New Zealand international from Perth Glory for £200,000, which will rise to £300,000 when Danny has made 60 appearances for the Leeds first team. The giant defender sprang to United's attention after a trip down under by the United boss and after studying videos of Hay in action, which arrived on his desk following a brief trial in Germany with VFB Stuttgart. Invited to join Leeds' 1999 pre-season tour of Scandinavia, Danny did enough to be rewarded with a contract, that could see him become the first player from New Zealand to become a star in the Premiership. Another player for the future, DO will hope to mould the Auckland born defender in to the complete English defender in his own style and United will hope they have picked up a player who may prove to be one of the best bits of business done by O'Leary, since he took over from George Graham in November 1998. After all it's not so long ago that United signed an unknown player from Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa..... a certain Lucas Radebe!!
