Dublin

Profile

Alan returned from a loan spell at Second Division Reading where he continued his rehabilitation, after being sidelined until January last season, with a shin splint injury, but spent the whole of the 1999/2000 season on the fringes of the first team squad and his campaign ended prematurely when he broke his leg in a reserve game against Manchester United.
Alan will have a tough job attempting to get into the Leeds first team, after Gary Kelly's successful season and the arrival of Danny Mills in the summer of 1999.
It was ironic that Alan suffered the injury at the same time as his rival for the right back berth, Gary Kelly, as after impressing in making a dozen appearances under George Graham, the non-availability of Leeds regular flying full-back would have presented him with a marvellous opportunity to become a regular alongside the host of youngsters who had been given their heads in the Premiership under David O'Leary.
Though he returned to fitness in January 1999, Alan struggled to recapture his real sparkle and failed to make the first team squad.
In a bid to rediscover his true form O'Leary agreed to Tommy Burns request to take him to the Madjedski Stadium, where Reading were bidding to clinch a play-off slot.
His form for the Royals earned a recall to the Republic of Ireland squad, for a friendly against Northern Ireland and two crunch Euro 2000 qualifiers in the summer of 1999.
