Lee once again showed magnificent form in the first half of the 1999/2000 season and his power house displays took right to the verge of the full England squad.
With the goals flying in from all angles at home and in Europe, Bow seemed a certainty for Euro 2000 until he was arrested in January 2000, along with Jonathon Woodgate, in connection with an alleged attack on a student outside a Leeds night-club.
That, coupled with a niggling groin injury, seemed to take the edge of his performances and it is now hoped that a full summer's rest will help the U-21 international bounce back to his former self.
Lee Bowyer's third and most important season at Elland Road, was his best since he moved for a then British record fee for a teenager of an initial £2.6m, building to £3m over time.
Lee has now translated the promise he showed into consistently top drawer performances, culminating in him being voted United's Player of the Season for 1998/99, and he has since committed himself further to the United cause by signing a new four year contract in September 1999.
The former Charlton man is now poised to become a full England international, after also winning rave reviews on his recall to the England U-21 side., including a two goal salvo in a win against Poland.
His second season at Elland Road saw the Cockney no longer necessarily a first choice selection, after the arrival of internationals David Hopkin and Alfie Haaland, and Bowyer had a lengthy spell out of the side, before re-establishing himself at the expense of David Hopkin towards the end of the season.
Occasionally his passing has let him down, but now he's added quality to the industry and the ability to bag goals, that are the core of his game.
A fierce competitor, Lee more than most of his United team-mates needs to carefully discipline himself on the field, as once again he topped 14 yellow cards for the season, not that Leeds fans will care one bit.
