PAUL ROBINSON
Personal Stats DOB: 15th October 1979 Birthplace: Beverley Height: 6'3"
Profile Paul was the last line of defence for the United youth team that won the F.A Youth Cup Final in 1997 and then reached the semi-finals in 1998. He has now established himself as Nigel Martyn's understudy, following the retirement through injury of Mark Beeney and a number of reliable performances when deputising for the England keeper during the 1998/99 season. His progress was rewarded when he signed a new four year contract in May 1999, that will tie him to Elland Road until 2003. Robinson was presented with the chance to shine at first team level shortly after the appointment of David O'Leary, when with Martyn and Beeney sidelined by injury, he kept a clean sheet in a 0 - 0 draw with Chelsea at Elland Road. In the autumn of 1998 he deputised for the injured England keeper for 3 games, but his chances since have been understandably limited as Martyn battles with Seaman for the title of England's number one. It is a credit to Robinson though, that he stayed ahead of Portuguese Keeper of the Year Nuno Santos in the pecking order at Elland Road. Having already been selected for England at U-21 level, Paul faces the frustration of seeing his former youth team colleagues becoming first team regulars, but realistically the Beverley born goalie has to be delighted that at such a tender age United are ready to rely on him in Martyn's absence.
